Fertile sows are the basis for a healthy sow farm. Fertility can be effectively managed by using De Heus' Premium Pig Feed for sows. Premium Pig feed is produced using clean grains (thus fewer mycotoxins) and reduces the occurrence of vague health issues and provides a predictable and constant fertility for your sows.

Gilt development

Fertility start with the growth and development of the gilts. The gilts must be inseminated between 250 to 270 days at a weight of 140 to 160 kg. To control this it is necessary to weigh and measure the thickness of its backfat.

During the growth period of the gilts it is important to administer sufficient calcium and phosphorous to ensure a proper development and strong legs. We strive for a growth rate of 720 grams starting at 25 kg. In case of a too 'lean diet' during the development, the sow will stay behind which will result in a deferral of the first oestrus. In case of too 'generous diet' during development, there is an increased chance that the sow will have to be removed prematurely and that the reproduction results will not be up to par due to fatty degeneration (udder, ovaries).

Proper Ovulation

The gilts must be transferred to the mating compartment between 210 to 230 days so they can get used to the individual feeding pens. To achieve positive fertility results the heat of the gilts in the mating compartment and in the gilt compartment must be registered. This makes it possible to increase the feed intake of the gilts to 3.2 kg of Premium Pig feed, 7 to 10 days prior to the targeted time of insemination.

Weaning

It is important for sows to be weaned in good condition. We like to see these sows lose no more than 4 mm during the lactation period. To achieve this the sows must have consumed at least 170 NEv (energy value) during the lactation period (5 days for farrowing up to 25 days for weaning). This can be achieved by using De Heus ‘ Premium Pig feeds. These Premium feeds contain clean grains (no toxins), additional Omega 3 fatty acids, additional trace elements and vitamins, more tasty raw materials, constant composition of raw materials, coarser specific fibre and a higher availability of calcium and phosphorous. To achieve maximum ovulation, sows that have been weaned must receive ad libitum feed from day one.

Which Sow Feed in which Phase?

After insemination it is important that the sows receive sufficient feed the first 40 days in order to recover and for the proper implantation of the embryos (high-low-high feed curve). The last 30 days are important in order to achieve proper birth weights and vital piglets. Special Pemium Gestation feeds can be used for this purpose. In addition to clean grains (no toxins) these feeds also contain Omega 3 fatty acids, additional trace elements and vitamins.

Naturally, many other (management) factors also influence sow fertility; however, nutrition is key. The De Heus’ Premium Pig feeds can be used to achieve optimal results. Ask your local specialist to find out which Premium Pig feeds are available in your region.

Premium Sow Feed

All of our sow feeds are made using clean grains and with the added adjustments mentioned above. All of these adjustments provide for a predictable result, high feed intake, proper intestinal health, maximum resistance, good fertility and a long lifespan for the sow. If these nutritional matters are in good order and the right premium feeds (clean grains) are administered at the right times, the first steps in achieving good predictable fertility results will have been made.
