Many dairy farms in the Northwest and Free State, produced mainly on farm have the traditional roughages for example maize silage, lucerne, maize stover, and grass hay available but also an extra raw material, maize. De Heus, in keeping with our Powering Progress promise of making use of every raw material available on the farm whilst supplementing only what is required and still ensuring optimal milk production, has developed the Protilac range to fulfill this need.
Over a short period of time a new product, the Protilac Power (V29877) emerged as a consistent performer. Protilac Power (V29877) is a high protein concentrate, but with the difference that it also is high in energy. This makes it a great product to use in high-producing herds or high-producing groups on farm. Protein and energy are a “traditional battle” in dairy rations, and it is always a challenge to get both at the desired levels, specifically in rations for high-producing cows.
The use of Protilac Power (V29877) has added value for a dairy producer in the following ways:
• It is supplementing both protein and energy with the same product.
• Ration cost is reduced due to using self-produced raw materials and eliminating transport factors.
• Cash flow improves as less concentrate feed is bought monthly.
• Ration adaption is easier should something change on farm, thus preventing the risk of a drop in milk production.
• Being very versatile it can be used with most, if not all the roughages found on dairy farms.

Table 1 Example of the use of Protilac Power (V29877) in a TMR ration
A great characteristic of the Protilac Power (V29877) is its golden-brown color, meal-like texture, sweet smell, and ability to mix homogeneously into a total mixed ration (TMR). This makes the Protilac Power (V29877) very palatable, and it is no secret among dairy producers that the better the feed intake is the better the milk production is.
The Protilac Power (V29877) and the whole Protilac Range of concentrates offer great cost-base solutions to dairy farming where home-produced energy sources are available.
