August Lingnau: Regional Sales Manager and National Dairy Product Manager
“I’ve always felt at home in the outdoors,” says August Lingnau, Regional Sales Manager for KwaZulu-Natal and National Dairy Product Manager at De Heus South Africa. Growing up in Phalaborwa, a small town in South Africa’s Limpopo province, he developed a deep appreciation for the land and the role of agriculture. This passion led him to pursue a BSc in Animal Science at the University of Pretoria, followed by a Master’s degree in Ruminant Nutrition at Stellenbosch University. Collaborating with the Outeniqua Research Farm, he worked under industry experts like Professors Robin Meeske and Christiaan Cruywagen. “Their passion for dairy nutrition was contagious, and it pushed me to explore the field in greater depth,” August says.

Finding his place at De Heus
When August joined De Heus in 2010, he saw it as more than just a career move—it was the start of a journey that would define his professional life. “The opportunity to work with international experts like Joost Janssens and to learn from leaders such as Pieter Du Toit (National Sales Manager – De Heus South Africa) and Koos Kooy (Director – De Heus South Africa) was invaluable,” he says. Their mentorship, combined with August’s competitive drive and commitment to excellence, has helped him grow within the company and contribute significantly to the dairy sector.
A role that blends expertise and fieldwork
No two days are the same for August, which is precisely what he loves about his role. His work involves a unique combination of technical expertise, service delivery, and relationship-building with farmers. “One day, I might be analysing product performance or providing technical support, and the next, I’m on a farm, helping a customer improve their operation,” he explains. This dynamic approach ensures that farmers receive the best possible solutions to enhance performance and on-farm economics.
For August, De Heus stands out because of its culture of innovation and teamwork. “We’re constantly encouraged to think outside the box, solve problems, and challenge ourselves,” he says. At the same time, the company provides the structure and support needed to succeed. “It feels like a family—everyone is working towards the same goal, and that makes all the difference.”
Success in dairy nutrition isn’t just about the right feed—it’s about understanding the farmer’s challenges, adapting to their needs, and delivering solutions that make a real difference on the ground.
Balancing work and personal life
While his career is demanding, August prioritises spending time with his wife, Mariki, and their two sons, Werner and Leonhard. “Family is incredibly important to me,” he shares. Whether he’s hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying South Africa’s breathtaking landscapes, he values the time spent outdoors. “It’s where I recharge and find inspiration.”
